1909-D $5 Indian. PCGS graded MS-64. Attractive mint bloom luster. Struck with technical exactness throughout, the Denver Mint's extensive 1909 production makes it the right choice for a U.S. gold type set. Luster is almost always fresh and gleaming; on a naturally toned coin like this piece, the luster has an even better quality, and 1909-D half eagles are noted for their sharp strikes. Pop 1965; 79 finer. (PCGS # 8514) .

1909-O $5 Indian. PCGS graded MS-62. Popular key date. The 1909-O is the rarity in the Indian Half Eagle series. Only 34,200 pieces were struck, the smallest mintage in the series. It is also scarce with About Uncirculated pieces very elusive and choice Mint State coins such as this rare to extremely rare. This key issue is both prone to counterfeiting and overgrading, making the acquisition of a certified MS62 a necessity for serious gold specialists. This is a well struck example that has lovely warm golden surfaces. For an MS62, this piece is certainly cleaner than what one might expect, with the only noticeable abrasion being a very shallow hairline in the upper right reverse field. Outstanding quality. Pop 18; 22 finer. (PCGS # 8515) .

1911 $5 Indian. NGC graded MS-63. Well struck. Frosty and untoned. When Bela Lyon Pratt's new Indian head motif was launched upon the American waters in 1908, the public was shocked (to put it mildly). Never before in American numismatics had a coin designer broken with tradition in such a overt way as did Pratt. For what Pratt did was to recess the design below the surface of the coin!

1913 $5 Indian. NGC graded MS-63. Quite lustrous and untoned. Half Eagles and Quarter Eagles were far more aesthetically challenging than the long-running and tired-appearing Liberty heads they replaced in 1908. There is nothing hesitant about this Gem Mint State 65! 1915 $5 Indian. NGC graded MS-63. Untoned. Around New Year's Day, 1908, Dr. William Sturgis Bigelow, an intimate friend of President Theodore Roosevelt, got the idea of making coins with devices sunk beneath the fields -- not true intaglio, but rather with relief designs depressed so that the highest points would not be at once worn away, somewhat in the manner of certain Egyptian Fourth Dynasty stelae. 1915 $5 Indian. PCGS graded MS-62 PQ. Premium quality for the grade. Pratt's Native American chieftain model remains unnamed, his tribe unknown. This was simultaneously an "impression emblematic of Liberty" as the Mint Act of 1792 specifies (for after all the Indians were free peoples until white men's laws made them third-class citizens), a compliment to Theodore Roosevelt, and a continuation of a trend begun in 1899 with G. F. C. Smillie's magnificent portrait of Sioux chief Ta-to-ka-inyanka ('Running Antelope') on the $5 silver certificate (PCGS # 8530) .
